In honor of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 2012, Promise Me This (Tyndale House) by Christy Award winner Cathy Gohlke takes place during the tragedy. Cathy unearthed the following sad tale. “It was said that most families in Southampton [home of the largest portion of lost crew] lost either a loved one—likely the family’s breadwinner—or a friend when Titanic foundered. Unlike the first class survivors whose names were announced fairly quickly, the lists of surviving crewmen were communicated days later,” she shares. “Even then, sometimes only a last name would be given with no first name or initials, thereby holding families with the same last name in terrible suspense as to who had been lost, and who had been saved.”
