Nashville, TN – On Tuesday, October 9, 2012 Julie L. Cannon, fiction author, passed away at age 50. Cannon, who grew up immersed in the culture of Southern storytellers and spent a lot of her youth writing short stories and poems, was best known for many fiction titles, with her most recent novel Twang released earlier this year. Twang provided a different look at the Nashville music industry.
Julie graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism, and she loved teaching other writers at the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta. Her own break into fiction came in 1998 when she won a contest sponsored by Hill Street Press. Hill Street published her first book, True Love & Homegrown Tomatoes in 2001. Simon & Schuster then purchased the paperback rights prior to publishing her next two novels.
Abingdon Press recently signed Julie for “the book of her heart,” titled Scarlett Says. The main character of the book, Joan, is a young woman who writes an extremely popular blog, offering advice based on the words of Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara.
Fiction editor Ramona Richards says, “I am devastated by Julie’s death, and I’m honored that a book she loved so much is in my care. I had a blast squiring her around Nashville as she did research for Twang and I will miss her more than I can say.”
