Author Mike Berenstain Continues Berenstain Bears With Two New Books

(May 9, 2012)

Award-Winning Authors Mike and the Late Jan Berenstain Teach Beginning Readers the Importance of Helping Others with Two New Books in the Berenstain Bears® Good Deed Scouts I Can Read!™ Series

The lovable Good Deed Scouts are back and ready to lend a helping hand in two new inspiring stories from the Berenstain Bears I Can Read! series.

With THE BERENSTAIN BEARS HELP THE HOMELESS and THE BERENSTAIN BEARS HONEY HUNT HELPERS (Zonderkidz; May 2012; $3.99 each), Mike and his late mother Jan Berenstain use simple sentences and playful illustrations to teach emergent readers, ages 4-7, the importance of volunteering and helping others.

In HELP THE HOMELESS, Widow McBear wants to open a homeless shelter, and invites the Good Deed Scouts - Brother, Sister, Cousin Fred, and Lizzie - to restore an abandoned house atop "Spook Hill."

While the young bears are eager to get to work, they begin to have reservations about the task, imagining ghosts, goblins, and monsters hiding out in the old house. But with a little courage, some good old-fashioned hard work and help from Old Tom, a homeless bear, the Good Deed Scouts rise to the occasion and realize the importance of helping those in need.

In HONEY HUNT HELPERS, the scouts learn the true meaning of the Bible verse, "A wise son brings joy to his father."

For their latest good deed, the scouts team up with Papa Bear and set out on a hunt for Bear Country's best wild honey. Determined to help Papa Bear win the local honey contest, the scouts find themselves following Papa through a series of hilarious obstacles -through hollow logs, muddy bogs, streams, a live bull field, and even outrunning a swarm of bees!

Just in time for summer, both books are sure to rouse young readers to action, inspiring them to get outdoors and spend their free time spreading a little joy and good will in the community by helping others - whether it be the homeless or a family member.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Since the late 80s, he has been very much involved as a writer and illustrator with his family's creation, the Berenstain Bears. He continued to work with his mother, Jan, creating new books, up until her death this year. The antics and activities of Mike's three children have provided inspiration for many Berenstain Bears books over the years. Though Stan and Jan passed away in 2005 and 2012, respectively, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from a studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.  www.berenstainbears.com
