On a trip to the barn during a winter storm, Megan Riley stumbles over a nearly frozen man. She helps Jesse Coulter into the house and nurses the stranger back to health as she anticipates her parents’ and brother’s return from town. But several days pass before bad news arrives: The preacher and the banker come to tell Megan that her parents and brother are dead.
