Jane Kirkpatrick’s latest novel, Where Lilacs Still Bloom (Waterbrook Press), spans 50 years in the life of the Lilac Lady, Hulda Klager, a woman who challenged early twentieth-century expectations for a simple housewife. Frustrated with peeling so many small apples to make her pies, Hulda hybridized two apple varieties to grow larger apples. Soon she turned to lilacs. Jane’s novel tells the joys and tragedies this inventive woman faced over her lifetime. Jane will be in attendance to celebrate the book’s release at the Hulda Klager Lilac Garden in Woodland, Wash., in April.
