Paul is a young, idealistic, energetic pastor. He’s also very self absorbed. Sarah is an older, widowed, new christian who’s very confused by her gift of prophecy. Neither of them are aware that they are being watched, guarded and guided by angels. One is a slave to his past and the other is branded a “wacko” but both are redeemed and loved children of God.
WHAT LED YOU TO WRITE ANGELS OF HUMILITY?
I wanted to write a story to encourage readers to live with their eyes on eternity, not this temporal world that surrounds and entices us each day. “For what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal,” (II Cor. 4:18). I picked two characters to demonstrate how to, and how not to do this. Pastor Paul an ambitious young seminary graduate is zealous for the Lord and self-promotion and Sarah Edwards, a recent widow and new believer at age 71, is misunderstood and ostracized because of her prophetic gifting.
STARTING OUT, WHO WERE THE AUTHORS WHO INSPIRED YOU? WHO INSPIRES YOU NOW?
I’ve spent my life reading non-fiction. The exception was Frank Peretti’s books, Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness. You can see his obvious influence in Angels of Humility because each character has angels and demons trying to influence them. That’s all the fiction I read until recently. I’ve been reading the books nominated for Christian fiction book of the year and now I’m hooked. Someone recently recommended Karen Kingsbury and I just finished Shades of Blue and I’m going back for more!
HOW DOES YOUR FAITH INFLUENCE YOUR WRITING?
I hope that what’s in my heart is in my art. I aspire to write stories that advance the kingdom of God. I don’t want the Christian message to be a sub-plot in the story. I want it to be the story.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN YOU WANTED TO BE AN AUTHOR?
I’ve always loved humor and toyed with trying to write it about 20 years ago (As I write this in 2011 I am 53, yikes!) when I was a broke, divorced single mom. I had an unreliable junker of a car that I kept pouring money into because anything I could afford would have been just as hideous. It finally died and with tears running down my cheeks I asked God to help me make something good come out of that transportation tragedy. I wrote a humor article called My Car is Driving Me Crazy and it was published. That was my shaky beginning.
WHAT DO YOU MOST HOPE THAT READERS GET FROM READING YOUR WORK?
I hope my writing goes far beyond just being entertaining. I pray each day for the people who have read, are reading or will read my work that their lives would be permanently changed. I want the reader to know and love Jesus more and have a deeper commitment to Him as a result of reading my stories.
