Set against the backdrop of the 1893 Chicago
World’s Fair, Olivia Newport’s The Dilemma of
Charlotte Farrow
(Revell Books) is her second
Avenue of Dreams novel. “The Chicago World’s
Fair represented so much of what was changing
in the American landscape, and that lured me
in like a sparkly new ribbon,” says Olivia. “The
fair was important to Chicago, whose citizens
were eager to showcase that the city was coming
into its own and out of the shadow of New York.
Inventions, such as the original Ferris wheel,
turned into everyday language; but at the time
took boldness and determination to accomplish.
All of this made the exhibition the perfect backdrop
for Charlotte Farrow, a young woman also
coming into her own.”
